VMware vSphere Clone Error Fix – “Number of virtual devices exceeds the maximum for a given controller.”
If you get the following error when you try and clone a VM in vSphere 4:
Then you must be checking the “Edit virtual hardware (Experimental)” box when you are cloning… DON’T DO THAT! Leave it unchecked and you won’t have any problems…

Apparently it works! If leave it uncheck is the only way to make it works, then what’s the function of checking box?
Yep – I can verify this one… it’s an irritating little bug, but nothing that can’t be overcome.
@Brian Goh: I think it may have something to do with the number of VMs in a given farm. Back when I only had a handful, this wouldn’t really show up. OTOH, now that the average farm in my care has around 200+ VMs in it, it’s almost a guarantee that checking that little box will bring some sort of headache.
